Connor’s First Month – the Apprentice Interview
The new apprentice Connor has been with us just over a month now, and he’s settled in well. We thought we’d catch up with him and see how he’s doing:
How did you hear about the apprenticeship?
One day I didn’t want to go to work after two weeks off. So I thought I’d change my life up and actually get out of a dead end job and into a career. Hopped on indeed. Here I am!
What interests you most about design?
The idea of being able to see my designs out in the world and thinking, “I did that”. The biggest thing though is being able to leave your mark on various businesses which eventually becomes a part of their history. So it’s great to leave this trail of designs as I go.
“Creativity is nothing but a mindset free.”
– Akanse A. Anago
What apprehensions did you have coming in?
Having previous knowledge of design has definitely helped me especially with the software. My biggest apprehension, however, was using software that I didn’t know.
What’s your favourite TV show?
I watch a lot of shows. The best is probably “The Grand Tour” although… can you class that as a TV show?
Where do your strengths lie?
In teamwork, being organised, timekeeping etc and being outgoing.
What’s the best factor for learning about design at Scribble & Think?
Definitely being able to deal with clients directly as I thought I’d have been given a back seat doing small jobs but it’s quite the opposite. I’ve been doing designs myself and dealing with clients first hand. Definitely, the best way to learn!
What would you most like to learn going forward?
Anything and everything! I love the whole concept and process from an initial idea to a finished piece. I think what I’d most like to learn would be the development of branding because it’s a very ‘personal’ type of design in the sense that you’re creating a client’s identity as this directly affects their business.
I listen to a lot of different artists and bands. Some I like most of their songs, and many I just like the one. To put this into perspective my Spotify playlist has 3,000 plus songs and this equates to 146 hours of music.
What has been your favourite piece of work (so far) and why?
There’s been quite a few. I can’t be too specific but I love the work where I’m given a blank canvas as I feel this way I can really stretch my legs.
What’s your favourite pizza?
Pizza? Anything that has pizza after it. [We checked and Hawaiian is in there too although he did say he’d rip the pineapple off. We all know that fruit shouldn’t be on pizza.]
What has surprised you the most about working at Scribble & Think?
How friendly everyone is. Also how much work I’m actually being allowed and trusted to do!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
As I answer this question the date is 08/08/18. In 5 years time, it will be exactly the same date but a Tuesday, not a Wednesday. I will most likely still be sat at this desk, still designing but hopefully, I’ll be minted at the same time 😉
